Blog Swappin' with Craft Edition

Wednesday, July 21, 2010

The fabulously talented Mandy is here today from Sugar Been Craft Edition. Check out her blog where I am taking over for the day too.

Hi, I'm Mandy from Sugar Bee Craft Edition over at http://www.craftedition.blogspot.com/ - I am excited to be here on Fun to Craft and swap spots with Stacey for a day. I love staying home with my 4 kids and all the fun that comes with it - I also love heading up my craft blog. I do crafts (obviously!) with tutorials, give photography tips, try out recipes - I've got it all! I feel like if I can do something, you can too. I have a link party on tuesdays, so be sure to pop on over for Take-A-Look Tuesday to check out some fabulous projects shared by the readers.

For you today I wanted to share a quick and easy sewing project - this would be a fun one for a beginning sewer, or even to teach a child to sew this summer to fill some of those "I'm bored" moments.

It's an Apron Dress-up Skirt - let's get started:

Cut a rectangle of fabric as the base. Mine is that cheap satin - it's kind of hard to work with but has a fun sheen. Cut it the size you'd like - anything will work. Since this is just to play in, I serged around the 3 edges (leave the top) - you can hem it for a nicer finish.

Then you cut several pieces of tulle (the fine netting stuff) that are slightly longer and about 6 -10 inches wider than your base fabric. Once again, this is for dress-up, so I wan't aiming for perfection.
Sew all the tulle to the skirt at the top on the right side. As you do this, kind of wrinkle up the tulle - this will give it some poof. It's the lazy way to gather. You can see in how I did it in the picture below:
I used my serger again, so I didn't need to finish that edge either. But if you use a regular sewing machine, either wrap a ribbon or bias tape around the top edge, or turn it under, so it looks nice.

Then I cut 4 strips of tulle, layered them 2 and 2, and sewed each to a side of the waist of the apron. I zigzagged it on for additional strength.
That's it - sewing can be quick and easy! I enjoy how it ties in the back, for easy in-and-out dressing up.
I made another Dress-Up Apron using a tie-on strip method and my model wanted to wear that one as a veil - I guess that's the fun of dressing up!
Thanks for letting my share my project with you. Hope to see you over on Sugar Bee Craft Edition!

Thanks again for the cute dress up idea Mandy. Just love your blog and all that you have on there. I always look forward to your posts! Thanks for swappin'. Go check out Mandy and leave her some comment love. She has some great ideas!!

Bring on the Light!!!

I am seriously a freak about having my house be light. I love to open up all the drapes first thing in the morning and I will often turn on more lights than probably are needed. I just like to have light and be able to see things. I hate being in the dark. Makes me not feel as light and sunny too. Please tell me I am not the only one??!!

So you can imagine my disdain for our old place that was built back in the day and had absolutely NO light fixture in our front room. It was a dark and dreary place at night. We had one tall lamp when we first moved there but at night, and especially during the winter, that room was a depressing pit! So you can imagine why a light bulb finally went on in my head and said, you need to get a table lamp in here! It helped lighten things up and I enjoyed using that room SO much more.

I know I should stop dreaming around on the web right now but my kiddos are napping and on a bike ride so I had a free minute! I think we are going to need some new lamps for our new place. We will finally have enough room again in our bedroom to have our king bed with our nightstands on either side of it. The last room not so much. We were a bit cramped if you haven't picked that up yet. haha I started browsing lamps. The hubs will be thrilled.

I love this lamp:This one is absolutely gorgeous too:I really want to get some new bedding too but can you tell my list of wants is getting longer and longer?? I am still on a student budget. Ugghh. Maybe one day my house will be as cute as I want it to be. I wonder if everyone always feel like that? Do you?

I keep wondering if it will ever be as 'perfect' as I envision it! Nah, your house is probably cute and would totally make me jealous if I saw it!! I always love when some of you take pics of your crafts and it gives a little peak into your house in the background of your picture. Darling paint colors, cute home decor. I am always green with envy. It is okay though, I love to live vicariously. Oh, I am helping my mom redo her laundry room. So stay tuned for pictures. Can't wait to share!

Who doesn't need this??

I am in awe at all of the craft blogs out there now. I love it! I think where there was once maybe 10-20 crafty blogs, there are now literally hundreds. I used to worry about competing and staying up on followers. I realized that it didn't really matter who has more or less followers than someone else. What matters is inspiring yourself and others to craft new fun things!

I started noticing some of the big bloggers posting less often and also some giving their blogs up altogether. I also decided to take a break. My family needed it and I needed it. While I loved all the new blogs before, I am REALLY lovin' them now. I cannot tell you how many cute crafty bloggers there are out there. I mean, we all have our faves but I still love to check out all the new ones too. I am always inspired and I know my house will be cuter because of it!!

One blogger who has been around for awhile and has some awesome ideas is Jessica at Running with Scissors. I was completely lovin' her sewing table post she did the other day. I need one of these!! The thing I love about it, is that it actually looks doable. I think I can make this without a lot of tools too. Thanks for inspiring me Jessica. And to everyone else, keep the ideas coming. I love seeing what you create and I love seeing all of your blog success too.

Oh, the move...

Summer time is really my favorite time of year. I know it is hot and yucky on days but it is just always so bright and cheery. I never really mind waking up early since it is so sunny outside too. And not that the summer is over yet or anything, but we are gearing up for our next BIG move across the US. We will be going from Idaho to Georgia after my hubby finishes the bar here.

I am really excited for our new place so I really hope it isn't a let down. I have been looking at some Area Rugs. There are so many colors and designs. What is a girl to do?! I can't decide but I know with having hardwood in our living room, I will definitely want one.I have also been spying down some new Bath Accessories. I am really getting tired of our current shower curtain. I want a new look. Plus, we will have 3 bathrooms in our new place instead of just 2 like our old one and I will need more shower curtains and bath accessories. These polka dot ones are pretty fun.
I am also looking for new Storage options too. I was not lovin' our set up in our old place mainly because of lack of storage and space. I am hoping with being quite a bit bigger, this place will not make us feel so cramped. I love this black leather box. So classy, yet functional. We are also looking at some Kids Furniture. My little man needs his own twin bed once we settle down and I want it to be cute too. I figure why spend money on something that isn't going to last us. I want something that can grow older with him. I love this option with the dark wood and the storage underneath. I really wish a Flat Screen TV was in our future too. Those things are so thin and nice. Maybe one day...The move will be nice....once it is over! Hopefully once it is over too, I can start being a regular blogger again too!
