Easiest Wreath Ever

Tuesday, August 31, 2010

When we moved into our new place, I was jealous. Yep. Jealous of some of my neighbors who have the cutest porches. I soon realized that down in the south everyone has these cute chairs on their porch. I am wondering if it actually cools down enough for one to use them outside?! I kept pulling up to our place and knew that things were missing. Like a wreath and some sort of cutesy type stuff.

I bought this wreath for 50% off at Hobby Lobby for $2.50. It is a BIG one...like 24 inches I think. I love big bold wreaths. So I was so pleased when I found this one. Then I wanted to spruce it up a bit but not add too much, at least not for now. I bought some of their Christmas sprigs of berries that were .99 each. I placed them sporadically around my wreath just to add in some pops of color. I also wanted another bold statement so I found a letter (again at Hobby Lobby for $2) and painted it black. I used some polka dot black ribbon I already had and tied it onto my wreath holder. I am loving it's statement already! Plus, it was $8.50 for the whole wreath. Can't beat that!

Also, I am planning to switch out the sprigs of color. I already bought some great ones for Fall that I can't wait to use. Oh, and I am thinking about either covering up that A or else ripping it off entirely. I don't know. I guess time will tell.I also added the black vinyl "Welcome" that I created in Make the Cut with the Ballpark font. I swear this entirely transformed my door. It went from plain white to having this welcome on it and it did wonders for the whole "look."

Don't worry I didn't stop there with our porch. I have a few other things I have done but that will have to be shared another day. I am off to finish up about 3 more projects tonight. I just broke out my sewing machine for the first time since we moved here and I am just giddy to use it again. All new pillow covers for the pillows on our couches are going to fabulous. Don't get me wrong, I love our pillows how they are now but they aren't matching my whole ensemble so I need some covers to tie it all together. Can't wait to reveal it all. Slowly but surely so stay tuned. Oh and don't forget to go enter the giveaway for the Target gift card here.

Fake Window

Tuesday, June 15, 2010

This was previously posted on All Thingz Related for a blog swap but I am reposting it here for keepsake purposes.

Here is a fun project that anyone can do. I apologize for the lack of pictures but seriously, this is the EASIEST project to do!
Buy a mirror and paint it the color of your choice (if it isn't already). I think this came from a yard sale for like $1. Now get trim pieces (pine or whatever is cheap) and cut one long piece to go vertically on your mirror. You can use any Elmer's, Gorilla glue, or wood glue to attach it to your mirror. Next, cut two smaller pieces to fit in on either side to form the cross. This will make it appear to be a 4 paned window. Glue those pieces down. Now screw or nail it up to any spot you desire...inside or out. Here is ours. It is on the outside of a shed. It adds just the right touch to make it look a little homier. I think all it needs now is a planter box below it with flowers.

Damask Tray

Tuesday, April 20, 2010

***Don't forget to enter the CSN giveaway going on now until Thursday!!

Oh, how I love me some damask. I cannot get enough of it. So when I found this beaut:
at Goodwill awhile back for $1, I knew I could turn it into something great. I put a little elbow grease into it and cleaned it up. I added some spackle to fill in any spaces between those wood patterns on the front. It was still looking pretty yuck though. I sprayed it black which helped a TON. Then I was in search of the perfect thing to cover it up. I thought of scrapbook paper but it wouldn't be wide enough and I didn't really want more than one or having to match things up. So I was on a mission to find something to work and something I loved. Hence the reason, I didn't post this before. It got put on the back burner until I had time to really look.I found this wrapping paper at Hobby Lobby and I was instantly in love. I knew it was just what I was looking for. So I cut it down to fit down inside my tray. You can kind of tell in the picture above that I made it just a bit bigger on each of the sides so I could use an exacto knife to cut around it. The tray was not perfectly straight and I didn't want any gaps. I started out using Mod Podge and this happened: Not once, not twice but three times. I tried different amounts and also tried it beneath and on top of the wrapping paper. It was just too thin and was making it bubble up. The perfectionist in me would not allow any bubbling so I would rip it off and try again.I whipped out my spray adhesive and sprayed the back and it stuck SO well. I sprayed, exacto'd, and carefully put it into place on top of my tray. Then I knew that the Mod Podge would make it wrinkle again but I wanted to seal it to some extent.I grabbed this Matte Finish by Krylon and sprayed the top with a few different coats, making sure to not get it too damp each time.
Now I have something gorgeous with my damask pattern. I am in love. I just can't wait to put it on a shelf....but that will probably have to wait until I move. So for the next little while, you will probably get pictures of decor pieces but nothing put together. Just remember that I am moving 2 times and then hopefully I can share how it works all together!

Ugly Computer Cords

Saturday, March 6, 2010

Here is the crawler that can't seem to stay away from my computer cords. And here are the computer cords that are very unsightly and ugly. I figured I could take care of both of my problems in one swoop.
An empty cereal box.
Cut off the ends of one side.
There is the opening where my cords will soon be housed.
I grabbed some newspaper print that I have laying around. I did a post about the many uses for this here. Here is one more good use I guess.
I wrapped up the box just like it was a present.
Then I grabbed my distressing ink pad and a stamp.I stamped some flowers on the paper all around. I really was going for a very low key design here. I don't really want it to stand out but I don't want it to be totally ugly either. Once I was done stamping, I started pushing the cords into the box.Once they were all in, it was looking much better.A twist tie to hold back the cords and a free cereal box later, and my cords were looking pretty darn good. I was thinking if you wanted it to be even more cute than mine (cuz mine is seriously more for safety than it is for the cute factor), you could use some cute wrapping paper, fabric or scrapbook paper to really take it up a notch. I thought about tying something around mine to make a sash or add a fabric flower embellishment. But you could also use some ribbon or buttons. There are so many different ideas. I was mainly trying to stop my little one from chewing on the cords. Here is to a crisis averted and some time spent working on a fun project.

Redo {Candle Holder}

Thursday, February 4, 2010

I found this beauty at the Goodwill a couple weeks ago. It didn't have a price tag on it but I knew the price would be right...which it was. Only 1 buck! Can't beat that. As soon as I saw it, I loved the ornate detailing and the thick stand. The scroll design is too cute...well maybe not in gold but I knew a little spray painting love is all it would take!
It is a beauty all black and shiny. Looks brand new! The only bad thing is that I haven't found a candle in my stash big enough to make the candle not look super tiny and somewhat lame. So I am still in search of the perfect topper. I also tried tying jute near the top but it just didn't have the right look. Sometimes you try things out, and they just don't work. But its worth trying!

I love it just plain black. I think I need a red or white candle and I may do a scrapbook paper wrap around my candle. Just to give it a little more something. I got a TON of other stuff the day when I went thrifting and will have many more projects to share!! If only this weather would stay nice for me. Too bad I can't control that. Have you found any great thrifty finds lately?

From Thrifty to Nifty

Friday, December 4, 2009

So I was lucky enough to find these two beauties at the Goodwill. 1.99 each, now that is what I call a steal. I debated about what to transform them into but then I remembered my cute and crafty friend Joni. She has the cutest earring holder in her bathroom. So I decided to finally make something similar so that I would have a place to put all of my earrings.

Just spray painted the frame black with Krylon Glossy Black. Then it is just regular screen (like the kind you use in your windows) stapled onto the back of the frame. I also wanted a place to hold little girl's bows. What could be better than a cute bow holder? Again, I just spray painted the frame and stapled ribbons to the back. Super easy and way cute!
